Dispersal modeling of fish early life stages: sensitivity with application to Atlantic cod in the western Gulf of Maine ArchiMer

As an initial step in establishing mechanistic relationships between environmental variability and recruitment in Atlantic cod Gadhus morhua along the coast of the western Gulf of Maine, we assessed transport success of larvae from major spawning grounds to nursery areas with particle tracking using the unstructured grid model FVCOM (finite volume coastal ocean model). In coastal areas, dispersal of early planktonic life stages of fish and invertebrate species is highly dependent on the regional dynamics and its variability, which has to be captured by our models. The aim of this study was to characterise concentration- and time-dependent responses in juvenile Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) following exposure for one and three weeks to the water-soluble fraction (WAF) of three weathered oils: Arabian Light crude oil (ALC), North Sea crude oil (NSC) and ship-diesel. The sum of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in water was highest after one week of exposure and within environmentally relevant concentrations. Influence of water temperature and oxygenation on the aerobic metabolic scope of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) ArchiMer

Environmental influences (temperature and oxygenation) on cod metabolism and their impact on the ecology of this species were investigated. Limiting oxygen concentration curves (O-2 level ranging between 15 and 100% air saturation) were established at 2, 5 and 10 degreesC. The standard metabolic rate (SMR), the maximum metabolic rate and the metabolic score were then modelled as functions of temperature and/or oxygen saturation. The mean SMR at 2, 5 and 10 degreesC were 19.8 +/- 4.9, 30.8 +/- 6.1 and 54.3 +/- 4.1 mg O-2 h(-1) kg(-1). respectively. Between 2 and 5 degreesC, the active metabolic rate of cod almost doubled from 65 to 120 mg O-2 h(-1) kg(-1), to reach 177 mg O-2 h(-1) kg(-1) at 10 degreesC. Innovative behaviour in fish: Atlantic cod can learn to use an external tag to manipulate a self-feeder ArchiMer

This study describes how three individual fish, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.), developed a novel behaviour and learnt to use a dorsally attached external tag to activate a self-feeder. This behaviour was repeated up to several hundred times, and over time these fish fine-tuned the behaviour and made a series of goal-directed coordinated movements needed to attach the feeder’s pull string to the tag and stretch the string until the feeder was activated. These observations demonstrate a capacity in cod to develop a novel behaviour utilizing an attached tag as a tool to achieve a goal. This may be seen as one of the very few observed examples of innovation and tool use in fish.

Modeling the impact of hypoxia on the energy budget of Atlantic cod in two populations of the Gulf of Saint-Lawrence, Canada ArchiMer

Like many marine species around the globe, several stocks of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) live in increasingly hypoxic waters. In the Gulf of Saint Lawrence (GSL) in Canada, the deep channels traversing the semi-enclosed sea exhibit year-round hypoxia, identified as one of the limiting factor for the recovery of GSL cod in its northern part. While many individuals in the northern GSL are known to venture in deeper, warmer, and more hypoxic waters of the Gulf channels, those in the southern GSL live in a shallower, colder, and more oxygenated environment. Reproductive investment in Atlantic cod populations off Newfoundland: Contrasting trends between males and females ArchiMer

Life history theory predicts selection for higher reproductive investment in response to increased mortality among mature individuals. We tested this prediction over the period from 1978 to 2013 for three populations of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) off Newfoundland. These populations were heavily fished for a long period. We considered changes in standardized gonad weight as a proxy for changes in gonadal investment. We accounted for the allometry between gonad and body weight, individual body condition, water temperature, and potential spatial and density-dependent effects.
